Stokes confirms retirement decision

England captain Ben Stokes has confirmed he will not reverse his international retirement for next year’s Ashes, stating he is “done.” The all-rounder announced his retirement on Sunday, with his international career concluding on Monday following England’s defeat by New Zealand in the third Test. When asked about a potential return to play against Australia next summer, Stokes expressed contentment with his decision, describing it as one he did not take lightly and had considered for a significant period.

Stokes’s international career spanned 15 years, during which he played 122 Tests, 114 one-day internationals, and 43 T20s. His final match saw England lose by 160 runs, confirming a 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand. Following the match, Stokes remained composed, embracing his opponents and briefly acknowledging the crowd after post-match interviews.

Factors influencing the decision

The all-rounder indicated on Sunday that retirement was the “best thing” for him. On Monday, he further elaborated that recent incidents, including being left out of the second Test against the Black Caps due to breaking the team’s midnight curfew, had contributed to his decision. Stokes acknowledged that a “series of unfortunate events” had occurred.

He suggested that over the coming weeks, he would be able to assess the extent to which these incidents played a role. However, the primary factor cited was the cumulative toll of his role over the past six to 12 months. Stokes noted that while his position was an honour and exciting, it also came with negative aspects.

This series defeat marks England’s first at home in a three-Test series or more since 2012. It also follows a 4-1 Ashes defeat and means England have not secured a series win since late 2024. Stokes, who has captained England’s Test side since 2022, has been responsible for several memorable moments, including an unbeaten century against Australia at Headingley in 2019 and his performance in England’s 50-over World Cup final victory at Lord’s in the same year.

McCullum’s position and team performance

Head coach Brendon McCullum attempted to persuade Stokes to continue when informed of his plans on Sunday. McCullum’s position is now under scrutiny following the series loss. He has affirmed his commitment to English cricket, stating his belief in the team’s direction and his desire to remain as coach.

McCullum expressed that not winning does not necessarily mean their approach is incorrect. He emphasised a continuous effort to improve, evolve, and progress while maintaining their identity, aiming to become a better cricket team. Regarding Stokes’s retirement, McCullum noted that Stokes had made up his mind, and it was clear he wished to step away, describing the situation as sad due to their close working relationship over four years.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has called for more honesty from McCullum, suggesting that his positive outlook cannot mask the fact that England has lost seven of their last nine Test matches. Hussain highlighted a perceived lack of attention to detail within the team, which he believes extends beyond McCullum and Stokes to the broader cricket board.

Hussain pointed to instances where he felt McCullum’s assessment of tactics, such as the use of short balls to the New Zealand tail at The Oval and the aggressive batting approach on day four in Nottingham, lacked frankness. He argued that England needed players to grind out scores, similar to how Daryl Mitchell played, to set up easier batting conditions later in matches.

The former captain suggested that England could learn from New Zealand’s approach to preparation and understanding of roles, especially given that many New Zealanders are part of England’s backroom staff. The series results saw England win the first Test at Lord’s by 115 runs, while New Zealand won the second Test at The Oval by 253 runs and the third Test at Trent Bridge by 160 runs.

McCullum said he is excited about what the future holds for the team.
