England’s World Cup campaign continues with a draw

England were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana in their second World Cup 2026 group stage match in Boston. This result means England did not secure their spot in the last 32, though they remain in a strong position to advance from Group L. The draw marks the fourth consecutive tournament where England has struggled in their second group fixture.

The match saw England complete 190 more passes than their opponents in the opening 35 minutes. Despite this, their first clear chance of the first half came when Declan Rice headed over after Noni Madueke created space. Ghana adopted a defensive strategy throughout the game, making it difficult for England to create scoring opportunities.

Anthony Gordon registered England’s first shot on target in the 50th minute, a tame effort directed at Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Ghana’s defensive approach aimed to frustrate England and secure a point, which would largely ensure their own progression to the last 32.

Key moments and player performances

Jordan Pickford, England’s goalkeeper, had a quiet game with no saves to make. In defence, Reece James moved into midfield when possible, linking with Noni Madueke and delivering a cross that England attackers could not reach. Marc Guehi, stepping in for John Stones, showed calmness and initiated an attack that led to a Harry Kane shot. Ezri Konsa was solid defensively but was fortunate not to concede a penalty after a challenge on Prince Adu. Djed Spence, making his first start of the tournament, made an important block and contributed to a passage of play ending in a Gordon shot.

Midfielders Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson worked to break up play, though Rice’s usual quality from set-pieces was not fully evident, despite delivering some dangerous corners. Anthony Gordon, the Barcelona winger, was tightly marked by Ghana’s Marvin Senaya, limiting his impact. Jude Bellingham, often a spark for England, was reduced to flashes due to Ghana’s deep defence and limited space, and was substituted in the second half. Noni Madueke stayed high and wide, forming a developing partnership with James, and delivered a dangerous cross in the second half.

Harry Kane had a rare quiet game, finding space limited due to Ghana’s deep defence. He missed a late close-range chance, sending the ball over the crossbar after Nico O’Reilly’s header hit the crossbar. O’Reilly, who replaced Spence, also hit the crossbar with a header. Substitutes Bukayo Saka, Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze, and Marcus Rashford were introduced to inject urgency, with Saka forcing a save from Asare.

Jude Bellingham was named player of the match, though he expressed that he did not feel he deserved it, suggesting it should have gone to a Ghana player. England head coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged Ghana’s physical and committed play, stating he anticipated a difficult game. He noted that England had enough shots and crosses, including a significant chance for Harry Kane. England will now prepare for their final group game against Panama, with progression still in their own hands.
