England manager Thomas Tuchel has addressed his selection strategy for full-backs following the confirmation that Reece James will not participate in Saturday’s World Cup match against Panama. James, a right-back for Chelsea, reported a hamstring issue after the goalless draw against Ghana earlier in the week.

Tuchel confirmed that James did not travel with the squad from their Kansas City base to New Jersey for the final Group L fixture. Despite this, the manager expressed confidence that James could still feature in England‘s last-32 match next week. However, reports suggest that James is a significant doubt for the initial knockout stages, even though England has already secured a place in the next round.

Injury Concerns and Squad Depth

The injuries to James and Tino Livramento, who returned home from the United States due to a calf problem, have brought Tuchel’s decision to include only three recognised full-backs in the squad under scrutiny. The genuine full-backs selected were Djed Spence, James, and Livramento.

Other players in the squad who can cover full-back positions include Nico O’Reilly, who played left-back for Manchester City last season but is primarily a midfielder, and Dan Burn, a recognised centre-back who has also played at left-back. Tuchel’s alternative options for right-back include Spence and central defenders Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa.

Tuchel stated his satisfaction with his defensive options, saying, “Yes, I am [happy with my options at right-back]. I selected the team, so I’m very happy with everything with the characteristic of the players and strengths that they give us.” He acknowledged the challenge of player availability in a tournament setting, adding, “We would love to have every single key player, we would love to have them available, it’s not available — we find solutions, it’s what we do. It’s a tournament, we move on.”

Both James and Livramento have a history of injuries, which has led to questions regarding Tuchel’s decision to bring them to the World Cup. Despite this, Tuchel remains optimistic about James’s return during the tournament. He described James’s condition as a “minor hamstring issue” and confirmed that the player is undergoing an accelerated rehabilitation programme. Tuchel believes James will be available later in the competition.

Player Availability for Panama Match

In more positive news for the England squad, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson are all expected to be available for the match against Panama. Rice, who had strapping on his left calf after the Ghana game, and Anderson, who had a glute issue, both missed training on Thursday but rejoined the team on Friday.

Saka is also ready to start the upcoming game, having come off the bench in the first two matches due to a long-term Achilles tendinitis complaint. While Rice is expected to be available, it remains to be seen if Tuchel will start him, as he is at risk of suspension for the last-32 match after receiving a booking against Ghana.

Meanwhile, at Panama‘s training session, an altercation occurred between players Cecilio Waterman and Jose Luis Rodriguez, who had to be separated by teammates. Panama coach Thomas Christiansen viewed this incident positively, suggesting it indicated the team’s competitive spirit and desire to secure a starting position.

England aims to secure the top spot in Group L with a victory over Panama, which would allow them to plan their route through the knockout stages. The match against Panama is scheduled for Saturday at 22:00 BST.
