First Half Action

France currently holds a 1-0 lead over Sweden at half-time in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match. The opening goal came late in the first half from Kylian Mbappe in the 45th minute. This goal marks Mbappe’s fifth of the tournament and his 17th overall in the World Cup, placing him alone in second in the all-time scoring standings, behind Lionel Messi.

The match, played in New Jersey, saw France, managed by Didier Deschamps, apply relentless pressure throughout the first half. Sweden, under the management of Graham Potter, managed to hold off the French attack for much of the initial period.

Early in the game, Mbappe had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside in the 20th minute. Moments later, in the 32nd minute, a shot from Mbappe struck the post, indicating France’s early dominance. Michael Olise also came close to scoring, with an acrobatic scissor kick in the 35th minute that hit the post, followed by another effort in the 42nd minute that went just wide.

Sweden had some opportunities, including an Isak chance in the 36th minute and a clever set piece in the 28th minute, but French goalkeeper Maignan made saves to keep the score level. The conditions were warm, leading to a hydration break in the 23rd minute.

Mbappe’s Milestone Goal

Mbappe’s goal came from a corner that was worked to him on the left side of the box. He then moved inside and curled a shot into the far corner. This goal not only gave France the lead but also saw Mbappe surpass Miroslav Klose in the all-time World Cup scoring rankings. He is now two goals behind Messi, who has 19.

Following his goal, Mbappe celebrated with Deschamps, who had missed the previous game against Norway due to a funeral. France’s players then joined in the celebration as music played in the stadium.

The second half has now begun, with no substitutions made by either side at the start. Sweden almost equalised immediately after the restart, with an attack that saw Elanga go down in the box, but the play was ruled offside due to Bergvall’s involvement in the build-up.

France, considered favourites for the tournament, are aiming for their third star. They entered this match having defeated Senegal, Iraq, and Norway. Sweden’s path to the knockout stage included a 5-1 win against Tunisia, a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands, and a draw with Japan.

The winner of this match will face Paraguay in the next round, after Paraguay eliminated Germany on penalties in an earlier upset.

Second Half Underway

The second half is now in progress, with both teams returning to the pitch without any changes to their lineups. Sweden immediately threatened an equaliser, but a potential penalty shout for a foul on Elanga was dismissed due to an offside call in the build-up. France will look to extend their lead, while Sweden aims to find a way back into the game.

The match momentum, which measures the swing of the game by comparing each team’s threat, will continue to be a key factor as the second half unfolds. The momentum value represents the difference between each team’s most dangerous moment or team threat within a minute.

Fans will have the opportunity to rate players out of 10 for their performance in this game, with the rating system closing 30 minutes after the final whistle.
