Cheating Allegations Emerge in Division Two Match

An amateur cricket team from North Yorkshire is currently under investigation following accusations of cheating. The allegations centre on a fielder who is said to have clicked his fingers to imitate the sound of a bat nicking the ball, potentially misleading umpires into awarding wickets. The incident reportedly occurred during a Division Two match between Saltburn 2nd XI and Norton 2nd XI on a recent Saturday.

Footage of the alleged incident has circulated widely on social media, garnering significant attention. The clip reportedly shows a fielder at slip appearing to click his fingers as the ball passes a batter’s bat. Following this, Saltburn‘s wicketkeeper catches the ball behind the stumps, and the team appeals. The umpire subsequently gave the batter out, leading to protests from the bemused batter as Saltburn players celebrated.

The video, which has been viewed millions of times, has sparked debate within the cricket community. One social media user who posted the video described it as “about the worst case of cheating I’ve ever seen in cricket.” This individual also noted that Saltburn‘s wicketkeeper has accumulated a significant number of catches this season.

League Initiates Formal Investigation

In response to the growing controversy, the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League has confirmed it has received a formal complaint regarding the alleged incidents. The league has initiated a full investigation into the matter. Officials stated that no further comment would be made until the formal processes are complete.

The incident has been dubbed “Clicky Ponting” online, a reference to former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, and has drawn comparisons to other notable cheating scandals in cricket history. One such infamous case is Sandpapergate, which occurred during a 2018 Test match between Australia and South Africa, where Cameron Bancroft was caught trying to alter the ball with sandpaper.

Another historical instance involved former England Test cricketer Marcus Trescothick, who, in his autobiography, mentioned consuming Murray Mints during games in 2005. He stated that certain sweets could improve saliva’s ability to retain the shine on balls, which some interpreted as an admission of ball-tampering. Maintaining one side of the ball shinier than the other can enhance its swing, making it more challenging for batters.

The current accusations against the Saltburn player are not isolated, according to some reports. Rory Cotterill, captain of Middlesbrough CC’s 2nd XI, alleged that similar incidents occurred during a match against Saltburn in June, which his team lost by 29 runs. He shared a video that purportedly showed the same player clicking his fingers, with commenters describing it as scandalous.

Saltburn’s Performance and Wicketkeeper’s Record

Saltburn currently holds the top position in the Division Two league table. The team secured a victory in the game where the alleged clicking incident took place, winning by 159 runs. They lead the division by 17 points. The club has been approached for comment regarding the allegations.

The team’s wicketkeeper is noted for leading the league in fielding dismissals, with a total of 34. Of these, 31 were catches made behind the stumps. Earlier in July, during a 22-run victory against Shildon Railway Cricket Club, the wicketkeeper reportedly took eight catches. The investigation by the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League is ongoing following the formal complaint received on Saturday, 25 July 2026.
