Concerns Emerge Prior to Departure

Woking’s director of football, Jody Brown, has stated that there were “growing concerns” within the club before the National League side and former England striker Jermain Defoe mutually agreed to part ways. Defoe’s tenure as manager lasted just four months and encompassed six league matches. His departure occurred two weeks before the club’s new season was set to begin with an opening match against Sutton United.

Brown highlighted that Defoe’s feedback was consistently positive, and he frequently expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season, both publicly and privately. This led Brown to understand the surprise and speculation surrounding Defoe’s sudden exit. However, Brown noted that in recent weeks, feedback from various parts of the club, including players, staff, and other departments, indicated increasing concerns.

To gain a better understanding of the situation, Brown requested a brief report from Defoe and his assistant, Paul Bracewell. This report was intended to outline the squad’s current depth, recruitment targets, and any operational challenges. The aim was to ensure the necessary support could be provided and preparations for the season could be accelerated. Despite being requested on multiple occasions, the report was never received.

Unattended Meetings and Uncommunicated Concerns

Following the unreceived report, a meeting was scheduled to review the season’s preparations. This meeting was meant to include the directors, manager, assistant manager, and head of operations. However, neither Defoe nor his assistant attended the scheduled meeting or that day’s training session. Brown also mentioned that throughout his time at the club, Defoe had never directly communicated any serious concerns to him.

Brown took responsibility for the decision to appoint Defoe, stating that he believed Defoe was the right person to lead the club into a new era. He acknowledged that success as a player does not always translate into success in management and leadership. Brown expressed his hope that Defoe would succeed in his future endeavors.

The club had been fully committed to supporting Defoe during his time in the role. Player recruitment, staffing decisions, and other football matters were significantly influenced by Defoe, and he received the necessary operational and board support. Just days before his departure, the club finalized the signing of a player identified by Defoe, illustrating the continuous support provided until his final day.

Defoe himself described his time at Woking as an “eye-opening managerial experience” that he believes will make him stronger for future challenges in his career. He had previously been part of an interim coaching staff at Rangers in 2021 and worked in the Spurs academy before leaving in 2024 to pursue a full-time managerial position.

Focus Shifts to Woking’s Future

Brown emphasized that the experience has provided lessons for both himself and the club, particularly regarding communication with Defoe and his representatives during the four months and six matches he was with Woking. Throughout this period, the club’s objective remained consistent: to support the players and staff and give the project every opportunity to succeed.

Defoe had a distinguished playing career, scoring 305 goals in 763 senior appearances for clubs such as West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland. He also scored 20 times in 57 international appearances before retiring in 2022.

The club’s current focus is firmly on Woking Football Club and its supporters, maintaining the standards, culture, and preparations required for the new season.
