LeBron James thanks LA Lakers as he prepares for free agency exit

LeBron James has expressed his gratitude to the Los Angeles Lakers as he prepares to enter free agency. The NBA club had earlier wished the athlete well ahead of his impending free agency.
James, a four-time NBA champion and the league’s all-time leading scorer, spent the last eight seasons with the Lakers. During his tenure, he led the team to a title in 2020. His career with the Lakers followed two separate stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and four years with the Miami Heat.
Responding to a Lakers post wishing him well, James stated on social media, “No, THANK YOU! Truly an honor to wear the [Lakers colours] while trying to continue the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint.”
LeBron James’s Impact and Longevity
The Lakers Governor, Jeanie Buss, acknowledged James’s contributions, calling him “one of the greatest athletes in history.” She added, “We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers, including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances, and the countless records he broke in purple and gold.”
Buss also conveyed the team’s best wishes for James’s future, both on and off the court, affirming that he “will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.”
Despite his age, James has maintained an elite level of performance. In March, he surpassed Robert Parish’s record for the most career regular-season games played. Last February, he earned his 22nd consecutive All-Star selection, a league record.
His durability was further highlighted in October 2024 when he and his son, Bronny, became the first father-son duo to play together in a regular-season NBA game. This achievement fulfilled a long-standing basketball goal for James.

James joined the Lakers in 2018. Before that, he was the first pick in the 2003 NBA Draft by his hometown Cavaliers, where he played for seven seasons. He then moved to Miami, where he teamed up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, winning two NBA titles during their four seasons together.
He later returned to Cleveland and led the team to an NBA Finals victory in 2016, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit against the Golden State Warriors. Two years after his return, James departed his hometown team again to join the Lakers, marking his first time playing in the NBA’s Western Conference.
Future Prospects and Free Agency
Reports indicate that James has informed the Lakers of his decision to leave and continue his NBA career elsewhere. His long-time representative, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, has confirmed that James is not retiring.
The question of where James will play next is a significant storyline as the NBA’s free agency period opens. Reports on Monday suggested that the Golden State Warriors are looking to sign James, potentially creating a partnership with his former rivals, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. James battled against Curry and Green in the NBA Finals for four consecutive seasons from 2015 to 2018 while with the Cavaliers.
The Warriors are also reportedly considering signing Anthony Davis. Green has not exercised his option for the upcoming season, a move that could provide the team with financial flexibility for roster adjustments. Green stated that his decision to opt out was for several reasons, emphasising his willingness to work with the organisation for what is best, especially at this point in his career.
The free agency negotiation window opens later on Tuesday, but players cannot officially sign with a new team until the league’s offseason moratorium is lifted on 6 July.
