Scotland’s World Cup hopes in doubt
Scotland faces an anxious wait to determine if their World Cup journey will continue, following a 3-0 defeat to Brazil. The result leaves the team in a precarious position, finishing third in Group C with three points and a minus-three goal difference. Their qualification now hinges on the outcomes of other groups, as they hope to secure one of the eight best third-place team spots to advance to the last 32.
Midfielder John McGinn expressed his doubts about their progression, stating it is “unlikely” they will qualify. Head coach Steve Clarke echoed this sentiment, suggesting the team is “going home.” The mood in the camp was described as despondent after the match in Miami, where the concession of three goals significantly impacted their chances.
Data from Opta indicated a 42% chance of qualification immediately after the final whistle. However, the team’s performance against Brazil, a side that punished their mistakes with quality, has left many within the squad feeling that their campaign may be over.
Mistakes prove costly against Brazil
The match saw Scotland concede what were described as “poor goals at poor times.” The first goal came when Scott McKenna lost possession, allowing Rayan to set up Vinicius Jr, who then bypassed Angus Gunn to score. The second goal also involved Vinicius Jr, who headed in a cross from Bruno Guimaraes after Gunn and full-back Nathan Patterson were caught out.
Manchester United’s Mateus Cunha sealed Brazil’s victory with a third goal after the break. Despite efforts from Scotland, they were ultimately outclassed by their opponents. McGinn acknowledged that the team “fell short on quality” but insisted the players gave “absolutely everything.”
Clarke was direct in his post-match comments, stating, “We made it difficult for ourselves… We gave them the goals, we gave them the game they wanted. Disappointing.” He further elaborated on the team’s struggles, highlighting that mistakes at this level are severely punished. He noted that while the players showed an “unbelievable shift” in the heat and humidity, they must improve to compete effectively.

Reflections from the squad
Scotland captain Andrew Robertson also shared his frustrations, pointing to the team’s mistakes. He mentioned that while they started the game well and maintained possession, they were ultimately punished for their errors. “At this stage against these teams we can’t afford to make these mistakes… it’s not good enough… frustrating but we’ve only got ourselves to blame,” Robertson stated.
Robertson also reflected on the impending wait, describing the next few days as “horrible and long.” He expressed a hope that he might be proven wrong about their chances but conceded that the team did not want to be in a position where they had to rely on other results. He acknowledged that as a collective, they did not do enough to secure their qualification directly.
The team’s performance against Brazil, which included facing two of the world’s top-ranked teams in their group, underscored the challenges of competing at this level. Clarke remarked that “only Scotland can get a winnable first game and then get number five and number six in the world” as their next two opponents, highlighting the tough draw.
The squad will now endure a period of uncertainty, potentially until the early hours of Sunday, to learn their fate. The wait will determine if their World Cup campaign will extend beyond the group stage.
