Williams returns to Wimbledon singles
Serena Williams is set to make her return to singles competition at Wimbledon, where she will face Maya Joint in the first round. The seven-time women’s champion at the All England Club received a wildcard entry for her comeback. Williams, who is 44, has not played competitively in singles since the US Open in 2022.
Joint, who is 20, made her Wimbledon main-draw debut last year, losing in the first round. She has recorded one win in her last 14 matches. The draw for the women’s singles event generated considerable anticipation regarding Williams’ opponent, given her wildcard status meant she could have been drawn against a top seed.
Williams has played two doubles matches since beginning her comeback earlier this month. She is also scheduled to play alongside her older sister, Venus Williams, 46, in the Wimbledon doubles event, which they have won six times. If Williams progresses past her first-round match, she could potentially face 29th seed Alexandra Eala, with a possible third-round encounter against Iga Swiatek.
Former world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport noted Williams appears to be in strong physical condition, possibly better than when she last competed. However, Marion Bartoli, a former Wimbledon champion, expressed concerns about the challenges of returning to competitive play at Williams’ age, especially after two pregnancies.
Monica Puig, an Olympic gold medalist, expressed surprise at Williams’ decision to accept a singles wildcard so soon after indicating she would ease back into singles play. Puig highlighted that Williams possesses a champion’s mindset and will not concede points easily, making her matches interesting for fans.
Williams’ serve, which reached an impressive 120mph during a recent doubles match at Queen’s Club, is expected to be a key asset. Puig suggested that Williams would likely rely on her serve to secure free points and keep rallies short, leveraging her strong net play and doubles experience.

British players face challenging draws
In the men’s singles draw, Britain’s Jack Draper faces a difficult first-round match against American sixth seed Taylor Fritz. Draper, 24, is returning from a series of injury problems and is playing in only his second tournament since April. He reached the semi-finals at Eastbourne in his most recent outing. Fritz reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year.
Emma Raducanu, the British number one and 30th seed, is scheduled to begin her campaign against Antonia Ruzic of Croatia. There are concerns about Raducanu’s fitness after she did not participate in practice due to a shin injury. Raducanu could potentially meet top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the third round, a rematch of their encounter at last year’s Wimbledon.
Cameron Norrie, seeded 26th, is the highest-ranked British male player and will start against American qualifier Michael Zheng. Norrie, a semi-finalist in 2022, could face Canadian third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round. Other British players in the draw include Katie Boulter, Francesca Jones, and Jan Choinski, who secured their spots through their rankings.
Twelve British players received wildcards for the singles draws, six men and six women. However, a wildcard was not available for Dan Evans, who was forced to go through qualifying but lost in the second round. Three players, Ollie Tarvet, Billy Harris, and Max Basing, successfully qualified after winning three matches, marking the most home players to qualify since 1999.

Other notable first-round matches
Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic will begin his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title against Wu Yibing of China. World number one Jannik Sinner, who has not competed since his second-round exit at the French Open in May, will start his title defence against Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia. Carlos Alcaraz will not be participating in the tournament as he continues to recover from a wrist injury.
Reigning women’s champion Iga Swiatek is set to commence her title defence against American Taylor Townsend. Other significant first-round matches in the women’s singles include Aryna Sabalenka against Teodora Kostovic, Jessica Pegula versus Darja Vidmanova, and Magda Linette taking on Mirra Andreeva.
In the men’s singles, Casper Ruud will play Hubert Hurkacz, Marin Cilic is drawn against Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev will face Alexander Blockx. The draw ceremony for the Wimbledon singles events took place on Friday at the All England Club.
