British Grand Prix: More Than a Race

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is being described as a comprehensive weekend event, extending beyond just the race itself. The chief executive of Silverstone, Stuart Pringle, emphasised the event’s role as a source of entertainment, live music, hospitality, and participation. This year marks the 76th running of the event at the Northamptonshire circuit.

According to a recent report, the event contributed £154 million to the local economy over three and a half days last year. Approximately 565,000 Formula 1 fans are anticipated to attend this year, which would surpass last year’s attendance figures. Some attendees arrived as early as Wednesday, with some watching England’s FIFA World Cup victory over DR Congo on large screens. Thursday featured a concert with David Guetta and Anne-Marie, part of a series of musical performances.

Pringle noted the effort involved in building the event’s reputation within the music industry. He mentioned that artists like David Guetta, Sam Fender, Raye, and Richard Ashcroft are now keen to perform, with many being significant F1 fans themselves. The event also includes a programme of stand-up comedy, featuring acts such as Jack Whitehall.

Economic and Sporting Significance

The British Grand Prix also has a continuous impact on the local economy throughout the year. Pringle highlighted the region’s expertise in high-performance motorsport engineering, which has developed from the consistent hosting of the British Grand Prix for 75 years and the growth of an industrial cluster centred around Silverstone. He stated that jobs in high-performance motorsport engineering are almost twice as beneficial to the economy as other types of employment, underscoring the Grand Prix’s role in powering economic growth in the region.

Previously, Pringle indicated that between 40,000 and 50,000 individuals are employed in this sector. The race weekend schedule includes a 17-lap sprint race on Saturday, starting at 12:00 BST, and the main 52-lap Grand Prix on Sunday, which is set to begin at 15:00.

When asked about his preferred winner, Pringle humorously compared it to choosing a favourite child. He suggested that a victory for Lewis Hamilton with a new team at the British Grand Prix would be a remarkable story. He also noted that a 10th win for Hamilton at Silverstone would be an exceptional achievement.
