Villa secure Garnacho on loan
Aston Villa have confirmed the season-long loan signing of winger Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. This move continues a period of change at Villa Park. The loan agreement includes a conditional obligation for Villa to purchase the player.
Garnacho originally joined Chelsea last August from Manchester United in a deal reported to be worth £40m. Aston Villa is expected to pay a similar fee for the player, who featured in 43 games across all competitions and scored eight goals for Chelsea, but reportedly struggled to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge.
Garnacho’s departure from Chelsea was approved after he was informed that he was not guaranteed regular playing time under the club’s new manager, Xabi Alonso. He did not report for pre-season duty with Chelsea, as had been pre-arranged, and remained away from the training ground while his transfer was being finalised. Garnacho was named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection but did not participate in this summer’s World Cup.
Unai Emery, Aston Villa’s manager, expressed satisfaction with the signing, stating, “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.”
Continuing transfer activity between clubs
Garnacho’s arrival marks Villa’s third signing of the summer, following Johan Manzambi and João Gomes. This transfer continues a series of deals between Aston Villa and Chelsea. Earlier this week, Morgan Rogers moved to Stamford Bridge in a £117m deal.
Previous transfers between the two clubs include Carney Chukwuemeka’s sale to Chelsea in 2022 and Omari Kellyman’s sale to Chelsea in 2024. Additionally, Ian Maatsen moved to Villa in 2024, and Axel Disasi had a brief loan spell at Villa in 2025.
Another former Chelsea player, Jadon Sancho, spent last season on loan at Villa from Manchester United. Despite becoming a free agent, he was not signed by Villa. Youri Tielemans also left Villa this month for Manchester United after his £35m release clause was activated.
Meanwhile, Jackson, who has scored 30 goals in 81 appearances for Chelsea since joining from Villarreal for £32m in 2023, is reportedly open to a move to Villa Park in search of consistent playing time. Jackson was considered surplus to requirements last season following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.
Xabi Alonso has indicated he is keen to assess Jackson during pre-season, after Bayern opted not to trigger a £56million permanent purchase option in his loan agreement. Joao Pedro is expected to remain Chelsea’s primary option up front this season, having scored 20 goals in all competitions last term.
Financial considerations and squad registration
Earlier this summer, Aston Villa received a partially suspended £19.4m fine from Uefa due to a “significant breach” of squad-cost rules for 2025. A sum of £12.9m is suspended, contingent on the club significantly reducing its squad-cost ratio in 2026.
As a result, Aston Villa faces restrictions on registering new players on their squad list for the upcoming Champions League season. The club is rebuilding as a Champions League participant, despite being under Uefa sanction.
