Chelsea have announced the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033, and he is set to join Xabi Alonso’s squad in preparation for the upcoming 2026/27 season.

Rogers’ impact at Aston Villa
During his tenure at Aston Villa, Rogers established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. His contributions, including goals and assists, were involved in 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He played a part in guiding the Midlands club to a top-four finish and was part of the team that lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.
Rogers made his senior England debut in November 2024 and has since become a regular for the Three Lions, earning 22 caps. He also represented his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
The deal for Rogers is reported to be a club record for Chelsea, with a fee agreed with Aston Villa. This figure would also set a new transfer record for an English player. Rogers’ transfer also makes him the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history.
Rogers was previously with Manchester City before joining Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024. Due to a clause in his previous transfer, Middlesbrough is set to receive a significant sum from his move to Chelsea, depending on triggered add-ons. This is believed to be an English record for a transfer sell-on fee.
Squad shaping under new management
The acquisition of Rogers comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso works to shape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Rogers is the second midfielder to depart Villa this week. Villa has, however, brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg and has lined up Wolves’ Joao Gomes.
Rogers has been a target for Chelsea for over two years. His arrival at Stamford Bridge suggests the club remains an appealing destination for leading Premier League talents, even after missing out on European football last season with a 10th-placed Premier League finish.
There is consideration regarding how Rogers will integrate into the team and the potential impact on Cole Palmer. Rogers was among the England players selected for the World Cup squad over Palmer, highlighting similarities in their playing styles. Both players are capable of operating in various attacking positions and will compete for playing time alongside other forwards, including Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda. Alejandro Garnacho is being sold to create space within the squad.
Off the pitch, Rogers and Palmer have described each other as close friends, having progressed through Manchester City’s academy together. Palmer’s well-known “Cold Palmer” celebration was inspired by Rogers, who first performed the pose as a Middlesbrough player. The ownership of this celebration, which has been trademarked in the UK’s Intellectual Property Office, may be a topic of discussion. The competition for the number 10 role is a challenge that manager Alonso is likely to welcome.
