England’s World Cup Campaign Concludes
England captain Harry Kane has expressed that the team is “missing that final piece of the jigsaw” following their defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions initially took the lead in Atlanta but ultimately fell 2-1 to Argentina. This outcome has led to criticism of both the team and manager Thomas Tuchel for adopting a more defensive approach after scoring.
Kane conveyed his sentiments on social media, stating, “No words are big enough right now to overcome this empty feeling in the stomach.” He acknowledged the team’s proximity to another final, but noted it “wasn’t enough.” He emphasised the effort put in over seven weeks and the difficulty of falling short. Kane highlighted the high expectations for the team, which he believes are justified, and stressed the need to “process it and find a way to get better.”
Anthony Gordon opened the scoring for England in the 55th minute against Argentina. However, the Three Lions subsequently became more passive, inviting pressure from their opponents. Argentina capitalised on this shift, scoring two late goals through Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to secure a 2-1 victory.
Tactical Decisions Under Scrutiny
In the aftermath of the match, former England captain Wayne Rooney commented that Tuchel’s side “crumbled” and became “too passive.” This marked another instance where England missed out on reaching a World Cup final. Tuchel has also faced criticism for his defensive substitutions, particularly given that England maintained only 12% possession from the moment they took the lead until conceding the second goal.
Several sources have indicated that key players were reportedly disappointed with the team’s approach during the latter stages of the game. However, Tuchel has maintained that dropping deeper was not the intended strategy, suggesting that it “is maybe not in our DNA…to control the game and ball.”
This is not the first time England has been accused of becoming overly defensive in crucial matches. Similar situations arose under former manager Gareth Southgate, including the Euro 2021 final against Italy, where they lost on penalties after conceding an equaliser while leading 1-0. Under Southgate, England also lost a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and were defeated in the Euro 2024 final by Spain.
Statistical data indicates that since 1998, England has been eliminated in every instance they have faced a top-10 ranked nation in the knockout stages of the World Cup. Kane, who scored six goals during the tournament, reflected on the pursuit of glory, stating, “You have to fight for it, get knocked down, pick yourself up and go again and that’s what we will do, there’s no other way but to keep believing and keeping pushing.”
Tuchel has defended his tactics, attributing the team’s struggles to a perceived weakness in English football’s “DNA” regarding ball retention under pressure. He stated, “I think ball possession plays a crucial role; it’s maybe not in our DNA like it is in our Spanish DNA or in our Argentinian-Brazilian DNA, to take the ball and control the game with the ball.”
The manager also noted the physical toll on players due to extensive travel, covering 14,365 miles over five weeks, and playing in challenging conditions such as heat and altitude. Despite the exit, Tuchel remains committed to his role, stating he is “100 per cent” dedicated to leading England into the Euro 2028 campaign.
Looking Ahead to Euro 2028
England began their World Cup journey with a 4-2 victory against Croatia, after being tied 2-2 at half-time. Kane mentioned that Tuchel’s half-time team talk, where he reportedly told the players “if we lose, we lose in our way,” contributed to an improved second-half performance. The team subsequently drew 0-0 with Ghana and secured a 2-0 win against Panama to top their group.
In the knockout stages, England came from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in the last 32. They also secured a 3-2 victory against co-hosts Mexico, despite playing with ten men, and overcame Norway 2-1 after extra-time before their semi-final match against Argentina.
Attacking midfielder Jude Bellingham, who also scored six goals in the tournament, shared a four-page poem titled ‘The Lions Way’ by the team’s driver, Michael Chandler, which he felt captured the team’s experience. Bellingham called for continued “unity” among supporters, urging them not to let the spirit fostered during the campaign diminish.
Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, who assisted Gordon’s goal against Argentina, expressed his devastation following the defeat. Gordon, who has since moved from Newcastle United to Barcelona, also shared his disappointment, stating he believed it was “our time to win.”
The Football Association chief executive, Mark Bullingham, has backed England to learn from their defeat and compete for silverware at the European Championships in 2028, which England will co-host. Bullingham anticipates that Tuchel will “raise everyone” in preparation for the upcoming tournament. England will participate as one of four host nations, alongside Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland, aiming to improve on their previous final appearances in 2021 and 2024.
England is now scheduled to play a third-place play-off match against France, who were defeated by Spain in the other semi-final, on Saturday.
