Anthony Gordon himself scored the goal that nearly sent England to the final, demonstrating incredible energy and pressing effectively from the left. Substitutions and tactical shifts
As the game progressed, England made several substitutions. Ezri Konsa was introduced in the 72nd minute as England shifted to a back five, but the defence subsequently conceded two late goals. Nico O’Reilly came on in the 82nd minute, with the intention of using his height and ball retention skills in midfield, but this change did not prevent Argentina from keeping possession. The decision to move to a back five as early as the 67th minute, during a hydration break, was a point of discussion, particularly after Argentina capitalised on the tactical shift. This change was seen by some as reducing England’s chances and neutering their advantages in pace and athleticism.
Argentina’s Lionel Messi, despite being a distant force for much of the game, provided assists for both of Argentina’s goals after the tactical changes. His involvement in the dangerous areas was facilitated by the space created on the pitch. Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, made several impactful substitutions, including Nicolás González, Nicolás Otamendi, Gonzalo Montiel, and Rodrigo de Paul, which further tilted the game in their favour, culminating in Lautaro Martínez’s winning header.
