FA charges and club response
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association (FA) in connection with the Spygate scandal. The charges allege three breaches of FA rule E3.1. The FA has stated that Eckert is alleged to have acted improperly and/or brought the game into disrepute by directing or authorising the observation of training sessions.
The club and Eckert have acknowledged the charges from the FA. In a statement, Southampton Football Club confirmed their intention to continue cooperating fully and openly with the FA. The club also reiterated its full support for Eckert and his staff, emphasising their focus on preparations for the upcoming 2026-27 Championship season and their ambition to return to the Premier League.
Eckert has a deadline to respond to these charges. The club has indicated that it will not comment further while the process is ongoing but will provide updates to supporters when appropriate.
Background to the Spygate scandal
The charges stem from an incident where Southampton were removed from the Championship play-offs in May after admitting to spying on three clubs during the campaign. An independent disciplinary commission previously concluded that the espionage was authorised by Eckert and constituted a “contrived and determined plan from the top down.”
The English Football League (EFL) expelled Southampton from the play-offs after the club admitted to observing training sessions of Oxford United and Ipswich Town, as well as filming Middlesbrough before their semi-final match. Following Southampton’s expulsion, Middlesbrough was reinstated to the final but ultimately lost to Hull City.
While the EFL can only take action against its member clubs, the FA has the authority to penalise individuals and impose bans. The FA’s investigation focused on identifying those involved in the spying and assessing their culpability.
In June, Southampton owner Dragan Solak publicly stated his decision not to dismiss Eckert, despite acknowledging the head coach’s “mistake.” Solak argued that the club had already faced sufficient punishment. When questioned about a potential FA ban for Eckert, Solak affirmed his support for the coach, noting that he could not manage if banned.
Eckert himself has addressed the situation, acknowledging his responsibility and apologising for what he termed “bad judgement.” He expressed the difficulty of reading some of the public commentary but highlighted a renewed positive energy within the club as they look ahead.
Club’s season ahead
Beyond the ongoing FA investigation, Southampton will begin the new Championship campaign with a four-point deduction as part of last season’s punishment. The club’s first fixture of the season is an away match against Watford.
Eckert’s journey to becoming head coach began in July 2025 when he joined Southampton to manage the under-21 team, replacing Calum McFarlane. His previous experience largely involved youth football, including roles with Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig in his home country, and assisting Red Bull Salzburg’s under-18s in winning the Uefa Youth League.
His prior senior football experience included 15 months as an assistant at Barnsley and three years as an assistant manager at Italian club Genoa. Eckert was known to Southampton’s sporting director, Johannes Spors, from their time together at Genoa.
Eckert took over as interim manager from Will Still in November, when Southampton was in 21st place in the Championship. His interim role became permanent a month later. He subsequently earned three Championship manager of the month awards for February, March, and April, as the team advanced into the play-offs and finished within four points of the automatic promotion spots. The Spygate incident came to light just 48 hours before Southampton’s play-off semi-final against Middlesbrough, when an intern analyst, William Salt, was discovered observing a Middlesbrough training session.
