Guimaraes’ Stance Amidst Arsenal Interest
Bruno Guimaraes has communicated to Newcastle United his interest in pursuing an opportunity with Arsenal, should an acceptable offer materialise. This desire is reportedly driven by footballing ambitions rather than financial incentives, despite him being Newcastle’s highest earner. Guimaraes, who will turn 29 later this year, is keen to win titles, which he believes may not happen at Newcastle in the near future. He also wishes for Newcastle to receive a substantial fee if he departs.
Reports indicate that Newcastle would consider an offer around £80m for the midfielder. However, Arsenal has not yet made direct contact with Newcastle regarding Guimaraes. Newcastle officials have expressed surprise at the discussions surrounding his potential departure, as all communication has been through agents. The club is determined to retain Guimaraes and considers him not for sale until a concrete offer is received.
Guimaraes signed a five-year contract extension in October 2023. He has been a key player for Newcastle since joining from Lyon in January 2022, having made 153 Premier League appearances, scoring 30 times and recording 26 assists. He was also part of the team that won the Carabao Cup in 2025.
Arsenal has reportedly been interested in Guimaraes for some time, with manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta keen to secure his services. He is seen as a player who could provide an experienced option in Arsenal’s midfield, either alongside or as an alternative to Declan Rice. At 28, Guimaraes would be at the upper end of Arsenal’s typical recruitment age range.
Transfer Activity and Strategy

Newcastle had an agreement in place to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for £49m, a player who was among their top targets. However, Aston Villa later matched this offer, and Manzambi’s preference is understood to be Villa, influenced by the prospect of Champions League football. This situation highlights the club’s cautious approach, especially after a previous transfer target, Victor Munoz, was reportedly intercepted by Liverpool at the last moment.
The club is expected to make three or four more signings, including another midfielder, potentially in anticipation of Guimaraes’ departure. They are also seeking a primary goalkeeper, with a long-standing interest in James Trafford, and a full-back who can play on either side, preferably left-back. Additionally, a winger might be sought if Jacob Murphy leaves, and potentially a striker if either Nick Woltemade or Yoane Wissa departs.
Potential Departures and Squad Revamp
Several players could also leave Newcastle as part of the squad revamp. Nick Pope is expected to depart, though interest from Ipswich has reportedly subsided. There is also a possibility of Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock moving on. While no offers are currently on the table for these players, Newcastle would be open to their departures to facilitate a complete overhaul of the squad.
Losing key players like Guimaraes, especially after the departures of Gordon and Tonali, would be a significant challenge for Eddie Howe. The club views Guimaraes as invaluable, and his absence would impact their creative and offensive capabilities. Newcastle’s lack of European football next season, while a disappointment, is seen as an advantage for integrating new players and allowing for more training time under Howe.
The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) remains committed to Newcastle, providing assurance for the club’s long-term plans. The focus on developing younger players, like Sean Steur, who is seen as a future prospect rather than an immediate starter, underscores this commitment. Steur is expected to train with the first team and gradually work his way into the squad, benefiting from the full week of training sessions available without European fixtures.
The club aims to finish in the European places next season, with the absence of midweek games potentially aiding new players in settling in and allowing the team to remain fresh each week.
