Manchester City has confirmed the signing of midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest on a five-year deal. The contract for the 23-year-old runs until June 2031. Anderson expressed his determination to make the move happen, stating there was no hesitation once he knew City wanted him.
The deal was initially agreed upon while Anderson was representing England at the World Cup. With a fee of £116m, it was poised to be a record for a British player until Morgan Rogers’ £117m transfer from Aston Villa to Chelsea. Anderson will join a team now led by former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, who took over in June after Pep Guardiola stepped down as City manager.
Anderson’s Impact and Aspirations
Anderson joined Forest from Newcastle United in 2024 for £35m. He became a crucial player for Forest, helping the club achieve a seventh-place finish in the Premier League and qualify for Europe for the first time in 30 years. Last season, he contributed to Forest reaching the Europa League semi-finals and led the Premier League in touches and duels won.
He was also a key figure in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, featuring in every game during the World Cup. Anderson highlighted City’s winning mentality as a key reason for his move, stating, “They’re winners, they’re relentless, and that’s the sort of team I want to be a part of – champions and people who win trophies.”
City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, described Anderson as “one of the outstanding young midfield talents in the world.” Viana praised Anderson’s energy, work rate, and passing range, noting his significant improvement in recent years. He added that at 23, Anderson has considerable potential for further development to become a complete midfielder.
Looking Ahead to the New Season
Anderson is currently on a three-week break following his World Cup commitments in North America. He is looking forward to playing for City and has identified the first Manchester derby of the new season on 13 September as a significant fixture. He called City the “kings of Manchester,” a statement that may lead to a lively reception from Old Trafford supporters.
Anderson’s rise has been swift, having made his England debut in September in a 2-0 victory over Andorra. He believes he has much more to offer, stating, “I’m only 23, so I’ve got plenty of time to get to my best levels and I definitely think I’m not there yet.”
The Tyneside-born player, who began his career at Newcastle, also mentioned his admiration for Kevin De Bruyne, who departed City two summers ago. Anderson expressed his desire to emulate De Bruyne’s playing style, having watched him throughout his academy days at Newcastle.
Anderson’s statistics from last season include leading the Premier League with 3,300 touches, 297 duels won, and 306 possessions won. He spent half a season on loan at Bristol Rovers in 2022, where he earned the nickname “Geordie Maradona” from fans. The deal was finalised this week after Anderson’s return from the World Cup.
Talks regarding Anderson’s future were ongoing during the World Cup, with an agreement between Forest and City reached on the eve of England’s Group L game against Panama.
