On Thursday, the air quality in western New York was deemed “very unhealthy,” while the New York City metro area experienced “unhealthy” conditions. This resulted in a thick haze that obscured prominent landmarks such as MetLife Stadium, the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty. Many residents in the city were observed wearing masks to protect themselves from the air pollution.
Air Quality and Event Preparations
Despite the prevailing conditions, FIFA confirmed on Friday that the negative air quality from the wildfires does not currently pose a threat to the World Cup final. Earlier on the same day, tournament organisers stated they were closely monitoring the situation. Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House World Cup task force, mentioned that discussions were ongoing, with a representative from the National Weather Service present at FIFA headquarters to assist with monitoring.
Forecasters from the National Weather Service have indicated that winds over the Great Lakes could push additional smoke into the northeastern US, potentially maintaining hazy skies. However, they also anticipate some improvement in the forecast for that region. The primary concern for the final, according to Joel Dreessen, an air quality forecaster for Maryland, is whether more smoke will drift south following weekend storm systems.
On Thursday, Spain‘s players conducted an outdoor practice session in northern New Jersey despite hazardous air conditions caused by the Canadian wildfires. The air quality in East Hanover began as “unhealthy” on Thursday morning but improved to “unhealthy for sensitive groups” by mid-afternoon. The forecast suggests an improvement to “moderate” by Sunday, the day of the final.
Impact on Athletes and Public Health
Experts have voiced concerns about athletes training outdoors in such conditions. Dr. Courtney Howard, an emergency room physician and official with the Global Climate and Health Alliance, highlighted that high-level athletes, who exchange a significant amount of air through their lungs during practice, should avoid outdoor activities when air quality levels are hazardous due to wildfire smoke. She suggested that indoor facilities with clean air would be a more suitable alternative.
Mary Johnson, an environmental health research scientist at Harvard School of Public Health, emphasised that exercising in smoke-filled environments is unhealthy for anyone, as increased air exchange leads to greater exposure to pollutants. She noted that even healthy individuals could experience health effects from smoke exposure.
Wildfire smoke contains numerous toxins, with Luke Montrose, an environmental toxicologist at Colorado State University, stating that scientists have identified at least 1,000 such substances. These include compounds often associated with burning diesel fuel or cigarette smoke, such as formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds.
Wider Wildfire Situation
The wildfires in Canada continue to worsen, with over 200 fires burning out of control, particularly in Ontario. While the damage so far is less severe than Canada’s record-setting wildfire season in 2023, the intensity has escalated rapidly over the past week. Nearly 2.8 million hectares have burned since the beginning of the year, an increase from approximately 1.6 million hectares reported last Friday.
The persistent wildfire smoke episodes are being linked to climate change by advocates. Paul Mathewson, science programme director at Clean Wisconsin, stressed the importance of transitioning to clean energy to mitigate conditions that contribute to such events. Mark Parrington, a scientist at the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, explained that climate change creates conditions, such as higher surface air temperatures and lower soil moisture, that lead to longer fire seasons and large-scale, persistent fires.

Other matches in the World Cup have faced weather-related challenges, though not due to wildfire smoke. A knockout match between Mexico and England was initially rumoured for rescheduling due to inclement weather, but organisers confirmed it would proceed as planned. Earlier, Mexico‘s round-of-32 match against Ecuador was delayed by an hour due to stormy weather.
Concerns about extreme heat in July also prompted warnings regarding potential heat safety issues for some knockout matches. A powerful “heat dome” brought furnace-like conditions and temperatures expected to exceed 43 degrees Celsius in several host cities across the US and Canada. The World Cup final is scheduled to take place on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
