Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester City, extending his commitment to the club until 2030, with an option for an additional 12 months. The England international, who joined City’s academy at the age of nine, expressed his satisfaction with the extension, stating that playing for the club is all he has ever wanted to do and that it is always an honour to wear the shirt. He also acknowledged being part of a historic period for the club, with numerous titles won, while emphasising a forward-looking approach to win more.
Foden’s contract was previously set to expire next summer, and there had been some discussion regarding his future, particularly as he was occasionally not included in the starting line-up over the past two seasons. Despite what has been described as two difficult seasons, the club has shown continued faith in the player who began training with them at six years of age. Last season, Foden made 50 appearances across all competitions for City and four appearances for England, including two World Cup qualifiers and two March friendlies.
The new contract was negotiated with the assistance of agent Rafaela Pimenta, who also represents City teammate Erling Haaland. Pimenta will continue to work with Foden, providing an experienced presence in off-pitch matters, which could prove beneficial for a player who has changed representatives multiple times in recent years.
Looking Ahead with Enzo Maresca
Foden, 26, is considered a key figure in the team under new manager Enzo Maresca. He expressed enthusiasm about working with Maresca again, highlighting the manager’s positive impact during the Treble season, where he served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant. Pre-Season Preparations
The announcement of Foden’s contract extension is expected to boost City’s preparations for the upcoming season. The team is scheduled to travel to Hong Kong next week, followed by a trip to Seoul, South Korea. Foden will be among the relatively few first-team players available to Maresca during the Asia tour, as many teammates will be participating in the World Cup.
City is set to play Inter in Hong Kong on Saturday, August 1, before facing the K-League All Stars and Atletico Madrid in Seoul. This provides Foden with an opportunity to gain an early advantage over some of his teammates as he aims to regain his best form.
Foden’s career at City has seen him accumulate 20 major honours, including six Premier League titles, five EFL Cups, three FA Cups, three Community Shields, a Champions League, a Super Cup, and a Club World Cup.
