Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi plans to hold discussions with Lucas Bergvall next week regarding the player’s future. De Zerbi stated that the outcome of these talks will determine whether Bergvall remains with the club or is sold during the current summer transfer window.
De Zerbi emphasised his desire for players who are motivated and proud to be at Tottenham. He indicated that if a player is not happy, they should leave. He described Bergvall as a significant talent and noted that there will be strong competition for positions within the squad, with the aim of having two players for each role.
The manager acknowledged that he had not yet spoken with Bergvall but intended to do so in the coming days. He stated that the decision would be made in the best interest of the club, the player, and all involved. If Bergvall wishes to stay, De Zerbi expressed happiness, but if not, a new solution would need to be found with Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham.
Transfer Market Activity and Player Absences
The situation with Bergvall comes amid reports of interest from other clubs. Brighton & Hove Albion is reportedly preparing a substantial bid for the midfielder, with sources indicating they are willing to meet Tottenham’s valuation. This potential move would mark a significant investment for Brighton, who previously secured Luka Vuskovic from Spurs.
Other clubs, including Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United, have also shown interest in Bergvall. Tottenham is said to rate the player highly but is prepared to consider offers if their valuation is met, having already declined bids from Forest and Newcastle. Bergvall had reportedly expressed a desire to explore a move earlier in the summer, believing he would struggle for regular first-team football under De Zerbi following the acquisitions of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
De Zerbi also addressed the absences of Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur from the team’s preseason tour. He explained that both players had minor issues and were granted an additional week before rejoining training. Bentancur requested the extra time after a demanding previous season, while Sarr had a personal matter.
Regarding injured offensive players, De Zerbi provided updates on Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski. Kudus is nearing a return and is expected to be available to work with the team upon their return to London. Kulusevski’s situation requires further assessment over the next couple of weeks, as he has not played competitive football for an extended period due to a serious patella injury.
Squad Reinforcements and Preseason Tour
Despite having already brought in six first-team players this summer, De Zerbi confirmed that Tottenham’s transfer market activity is not yet complete. He expressed a desire to add at least two more attacking players to the squad. The manager highlighted the importance of increasing experience and improving the team’s mentality, noting that the club’s performance in the last two seasons did not meet expectations.
The team is currently on a preseason tour, which includes a match against Auckland FC. The first leg of their three-match stint in New Zealand and Australia will see Tottenham face Auckland FC on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. local time.
