Thomas Tuchel has stated he will not engage in a “blame game” following England’s elimination from the World Cup semi-finals. The head coach affirmed his commitment to closing the gap on leading football nations, despite criticism regarding his tactical choices in the match against Argentina.
The semi-final defeat saw England lose 2-1 to Argentina, with the team and Tuchel facing scrutiny for becoming overly defensive after taking an early lead. Donald Trump was among those who questioned Tuchel’s tactics, specifically asking why Harry Kane was positioned defensively when England held a 1-0 advantage. However, Tuchel remained steadfast in his decisions ahead of the third-place play-off against France, describing it as “the match no one wants to play in.”
Tuchel emphasised that England is not yet at the level of nations like France, Spain, and Argentina, which he believes have an almost inherent expectation to win the title. He acknowledged that there is a gap to close and expressed determination to continue improving. He dismissed the idea of engaging in drama or a blame game, stating he has the right to not participate.
Reflecting on his decisions after 48 hours, Tuchel maintained he had no regrets. He explained that his choices were made under pressure, trusting his instinct, intuition, experience, and competitiveness to help the team. He added that he would only regret not reacting to the situation, not the decision itself.
The coach also addressed Trump’s comments, initially questioning the use of Trump as a witness. Tuchel clarified that Kane was following instructions within a deep defensive block. He explained that defending in a block means the entire team defends together. While acknowledging that the team was not active enough and struggled to escape the deep block, he asserted that the team spirit and togetherness built over the previous six and a half weeks should not be questioned.
England’s final training session at their Kansas City base concluded on Friday, but their journey to Miami was delayed due to thunderstorms. Jude Bellingham and Jordan Henderson were seen at a barbecue the previous evening. John Stones conveyed the team’s ongoing pain and suffering from the defeat, highlighting how personally players take such outcomes and their continuous drive for more. He noted that the belief within the team to win the tournament made the semi-final exit particularly painful.
Harry Kane, England captain, remarked that the team is “missing that final piece of the jigsaw” and needs to “find a way to get better” after the semi-final loss. He described an “empty feeling” following the defeat, acknowledging that despite being close to another final, it was not enough. Kane stressed the high expectations for the team, which has been consistently performing well for several years, and the necessity to process the defeat and improve.
In the match against Argentina, Anthony Gordon put England ahead after 55 minutes. However, England subsequently adopted a more defensive posture, inviting pressure from Argentina, who scored two late goals through Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to secure a 2-1 victory. Following the game, former England captain Wayne Rooney suggested that Tuchel’s side “crumbled” and became “too passive.”
Tuchel’s defensive substitutions also drew criticism, with England reportedly having only 12% possession from the time they took the lead until conceding the second goal. Reports indicate that several key players were disappointed with the team’s approach in the final stages of the match. Despite this, Tuchel maintained that a deep defensive strategy was not the original plan and suggested that controlling the game with possession might not be in the team’s “DNA.”

Statistical data indicates that since 1998, England has been eliminated whenever they have faced a top-10 ranked nation in the knockout stages of the World Cup. Kane, who scored six goals during the tournament, affirmed that the team would continue to fight and push forward despite the setback.
England began their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory against Croatia, having been tied 2-2 at half-time. Kane revealed that Tuchel’s half-time message, urging them to “lose in our way” if they were to lose, contributed to their improved second-half performance. The team then drew 0-0 with Ghana and defeated Panama 2-0 to top their group. They subsequently overcame DR Congo 2-1 in the last 32 after falling behind, secured a 3-2 win against co-hosts Mexico despite being reduced to ten men, and beat Norway 2-1 after extra-time before their match against Argentina.
England will now compete in a third-place play-off against France, who were defeated by Spain in the other semi-final, on Saturday at 22:00 BST.
Jude Bellingham, an attacking midfielder who also scored six goals in the tournament, expressed his difficulty in finding words after England’s exit. He shared a four-page poem titled ‘The Lions Way,’ written by the team’s driver, Michael Chandler, which he felt accurately captured the sentiment. Bellingham also called for unity following the defeat, urging that the unity and love seen in the country should not end with this campaign, as collective effort can lead to significant achievements.
Morgan Rogers, an Aston Villa midfielder who assisted Gordon’s goal against Argentina, expressed his devastation at the outcome, noting the effort put in and the pain of how it ended. Gordon, who recently moved from Newcastle United to Barcelona, conveyed his belief that this was England’s moment to win the World Cup and the deep hurt caused by the outcome.
The chief executive of the Football Association has expressed confidence that England will utilise the lessons learned from their defeat to Argentina to challenge for silverware at the European Championships in 2028. Mark Bullingham anticipates that Tuchel will motivate everyone after the World Cup exit in Atlanta. England is one of four host nations for the upcoming Euros, alongside Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland, aiming to improve upon their final appearances in the 2021 and 2024 tournaments.
Bullingham confirmed that Thomas and the coaching staff will prepare the team for the Euros and lead them through qualification for the home tournament in 2028.
