England manager Thomas Tuchel has addressed the decision to leave Bukayo Saka on the bench during the team’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. Tuchel stated that Saka was fit to play but he opted for Morgan Rogers instead, believing Rogers would be involved in something special.

Saka, who had been managing an Achilles issue throughout the tournament, did not feature in the match against Argentina. Despite this, England secured a bronze medal after a victory over France in Miami. Saka was a key player in the match against France, scoring a hat-trick.

Tuchel’s Rationale and Saka’s Response

Tuchel explained his decision regarding Saka’s limited involvement in the semi-final. He mentioned that after the match against Norway, he felt Rogers possessed a special physicality that would benefit the team against Argentina. Tuchel also noted that the game against Argentina became very chaotic, leading to different tactical choices.

When asked about his role, Saka expressed a desire to have played more during the World Cup. He stated, ‘Of course I would love to have played more but it’s too late to talk about that. I try to do my talking on the pitch and it’s done now, move on.’ Saka also confirmed his fitness, saying, ‘I’m fit.’

Tuchel reiterated that Saka remains a vital part of his future plans for England, describing him as a ‘key player’ and a ‘fantastic football player’. He added that he felt a responsibility as a coach to manage Saka’s playing time carefully due to his history with injuries.

Looking Ahead After the Bronze Medal Match

Following the bronze medal match against France, Saka commented on the team’s performance and the criticism they received after the semi-final loss. He suggested that the team should use the ‘noise’ of criticism as ‘fuel’ for future success. Saka scored three goals in the match where England defeated France 6-4.

The match saw Declan Rice open the scoring, followed by Ezri Konsa and two goals from Saka, giving England a four-goal lead by half-time. France mounted a comeback in the second half with goals from Kylian Mbappe and Bradley Barcola. Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Djed Spence was fouled, and Jude Bellingham secured the victory after Ousmane Dembele scored France‘s fourth goal.

Saka described the bronze final as a ‘crazy, crazy game’ and expressed optimism for future tournaments. He acknowledged the disappointment of falling short against Argentina but emphasized the team’s progress throughout the competition. Tuchel also expressed confidence in his team’s ability to close the gap with winning nations, particularly with the UEFA Nations League campaign scheduled to begin in September.

Tuchel noted that seeing his team fight against France provided him with energy, despite the lingering pain from the semi-final defeat. He views the victory over France as a step towards closing the gap between England and other top teams, with the next challenge being Spain in the Nations League.
