Fury’s Preparation and Opponent Choice
Tyson Fury is set to return to the ring against Mariusz Wach in Thailand on Friday, marking a significant step in his preparation for a potential future bout with Anthony Joshua. For the first time in 15 years, Fury weighed less than his opponent, tipping the scales at 18st 13lb (120kg). This is 26lb lighter than Wach, who weighed in at 20st 11lb (132kg).
The fight, taking place in Pattaya, is designed as a tune-up bout to ensure Fury is in optimal condition for the proposed Joshua showdown. This will be only the fourth time in Fury’s professional career, spanning over 17 years and 38 professional fights, that he has been lighter than his opponent. The last instance was in his first fight against Derek Chisora in 2011. He also weighed less than John McDermott and Daniil Peretyatko in previous contests. Fury is also 3lb lighter than he was for his last fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov in April.
Wach, a 46-year-old veteran, has a professional record of 39-13 (20 KOs). His recent form includes losing seven of his last 10 fights, with a knockout defeat to Moses Itauma two years ago. Promoters have indicated that Wach was chosen as a credible and durable opponent who provides a suitable test without significantly jeopardising the highly anticipated fight against Joshua.
Event Details and Broadcast Information
The bout will be held in front of approximately 1,500 fans at the Max Muay Thai Stadium in Pattaya. Notably, the fight will not be broadcast live on television. This decision is reportedly due to the desire to minimise risk, as a defeat for either Fury or Joshua in their warm-up fights could jeopardise their planned future encounter. Footage from the Wach fight is expected to be featured in the third season of Fury’s Netflix series, At Home with the Furys, which could help recoup some of the reduced purse from the non-broadcast event.
Fury expressed his enthusiasm for fighting in Thailand, stating, “I’m delighted to be here and there are fans here from all over the world.” He also mentioned that he will be the first fight on the card, scheduled for around 10pm local time (4pm UK) on Friday. The choice of Thailand for the fight is also linked to Fury’s training base in the country, where he has maintained a relatively low profile. He plans to donate ticket profits from the event to local charities and will receive the inaugural WBC Humanitarian title on fight night.
Fury, aged 37, emphasised his desire to remain active, stating, “I want to keep busy. I’m not banking on any fight that may or may not happen.” He added, “This is the year I want Tyson Fury to stay busy. I may even have 10 fights this year.” The expected victory for Fury is intended to pave the way for the long-awaited fight with Anthony Joshua, who is also scheduled for a warm-up bout against Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
The fight against Wach is considered a low-risk, low-key tune-up, allowing Fury to gain valuable rounds and sharpen his timing. His promoter, Frank Warren, noted that Fury does not want to be out of the ring for nearly eight months again and wants to keep busy. The event is set to take place on Friday.
