Croatia secures vital points
Croatia has secured its first points in Group L of the World Cup after defeating Panama in a match held at Toronto Stadium. This victory keeps Croatia in contention for a spot in the last 32 of the tournament.
The decisive goal came nine minutes into the second half from substitute Ante Budimir. His contribution eliminated Panama, who have now lost their initial two matches in the group stage.
Panama had presented challenges for the 2018 runners-up during the first half, which concluded without any goals. Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic responded to his team’s first-half performance by introducing two attacking changes at the break.
One of these substitutions quickly paid off as Osasuna forward Budimir calmly converted Josip Stanisic’s low cross at the far post. This goal also marked a victory in Luka Modric’s 200th international appearance for Croatia.
Modric, at 40 years old, was substituted after 81 minutes and is the fourth male player to achieve this milestone in international football.
Panama’s efforts and upcoming fixtures
Despite Croatia’s win, Panama had opportunities to level the score and potentially extend their participation in the World Cup. However, these attempts were thwarted by Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, who made several saves during a period of intense play just before the second-half hydration break.
Panama’s hopes for progression were significantly impacted by their inability to secure a win against Ghana in their opening match, conceding a goal in added time. Thomas Christiansen’s side now faces the challenge of finding a result against either Croatia or England to maintain any chance of advancing.
Before their match with Ghana, Panama had a record of scoring in 11 of their previous 12 encounters. In their opener, Christiansen’s team registered 11 shots over 90 minutes, with four of those on target.
Croatia, on the other hand, has not managed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last seven contests. This includes matches against teams such as the Faroe Islands, Montenegro, and Slovenia. They also conceded six goals to Brazil at the end of May, although they did score twice in that game.
Croatia will look to confirm their place in the knockout phase with a win on Saturday against Ghana, who drew 0-0 with England earlier.

Other World Cup matches
In another World Cup fixture, Portugal played against Uzbekistan. Portugal failed to impress in their opening match, which resulted in a draw with DR Congo. They registered only a single shot on target in that game, a sixth-minute strike from João Neves.
Bekhruz Karimov of Uzbekistan is a player to watch, likely to feature again in the right wing-back position. His ability to get into advanced areas on the pitch was demonstrated in their match against Colombia.

Karimov often operates near the touchline but can cut inside just outside the box, creating opportunities for shots. He also occupies this space during set-piece situations, suggesting he may attempt to score if the ball falls to him from a corner.
The match between Panama and Croatia kicked off on Wednesday at 00:00 BST.
