Manchester United urged to consider Alexander-Arnold move despite rivalry

A former Manchester United player has suggested that the club should consider a move for Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite the intense rivalry with Liverpool. Wes Brown, a stalwart for Manchester United, indicated that a potential transfer for the former Liverpool right-back should not be dismissed, even though such a move would be highly contentious.
Alexander-Arnold recently ended a two-decade association with his boyhood club, Liverpool, moving to Real Madrid last summer on a free transfer. This decision reportedly led to a strong negative reaction from some Anfield supporters. He arrived in the Spanish capital to considerable acclaim, having secured every major trophy available during his time on Merseyside.
Alexander-Arnold’s situation at Real Madrid
Despite his decorated past, Alexander-Arnold’s prospects at the Bernabeu are already facing scrutiny due to an inconsistent start to his time in Spain. Last season, the England international started only 14 league fixtures. This limited playing time contributed to his exclusion from Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the current World Cup in North America.
The departure of long-serving captain Dani Carvajal earlier this summer appeared to open a path for Alexander-Arnold to establish himself as the first-choice right-back. However, the return of manager Jose Mourinho and the anticipated signing of Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries could complicate his position, potentially pushing him further down the pecking order at Real Madrid.

Brown’s perspective on a potential transfer
Wes Brown, who made 362 appearances for Manchester United during a 14-year spell at Old Trafford, believes that United would be unwise not to explore a potential transfer for Alexander-Arnold if the opportunity arose. He stated that Manchester United would be a very good move for the player, highlighting his quality and how he could assist new boss Michael Carrick’s attacking strategies.
Brown noted that Alexander-Arnold does not appear to be enjoying his time at Real Madrid. He added that any club in the Premier League would want to sign him, questioning who would not want him in their team. While acknowledging that such a move would be improbable, Brown referenced other high-profile transfers in football history, such as Luis Figo’s move from Barcelona to Real Madrid, and Michael Owen’s time at both Liverpool and Manchester United, as examples of unexpected switches.

A direct transfer between Liverpool and Manchester United is rare due to the intense rivalry between the clubs. The last player to move directly between the two clubs was Phil Chisnall, who transferred from Old Trafford to Anfield in 1964. Michael Owen is the most recent player to have represented both clubs, having signed for United 17 years ago. Brown, who is 46, suggested that if Alexander-Arnold does not see his future at Real Madrid, then the situation remains open.
Brown also acknowledged that Liverpool fans would likely be unhappy with such a move, and he was unsure if Alexander-Arnold himself would be keen on joining United. However, he maintained that it is not entirely out of the question. The discussion around Alexander-Arnold’s future continues as his situation at Real Madrid develops.
Alexander-Arnold arrived in the Spanish capital to considerable acclaim, having claimed every major trophy on offer during an illustrious stint on Merseyside.
