South Africa has made history by advancing to the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time, following a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey. The decisive goal came in the second half from Thapelo Maseko, securing three points for South Africa and moving them to second place in Group A, behind Mexico.

The win sparked celebrations among fans in Johannesburg, with many staying up late to watch the match. This achievement marks a significant moment for South African football, especially considering the team had not qualified for a World Cup since hosting it in 2010, and had previously finished third in every other group stage appearance.

Historic Victory in Monterrey

The match, held in Monterrey, saw South Africa adopt a tactical approach, focusing on sitting back and counter-attacking. While South Korea maintained more possession, they struggled to create clear opportunities. Maseko’s goal, scored in the 63rd minute, was the only one of the game. He received the ball inside the box, took a touch, and struck it through the legs of Jens Castrop and into the near post.

Prior to Maseko’s goal, much of the stadium’s excitement came from Mexico fans, who were watching as neutrals and celebrating their own team’s goals against the Czech Republic. South Korea’s attempts on goal were limited, with a header from Oh Hyeon-gyu and an early strike from Lee Kang-in being among their few chances. Despite bringing on former Tottenham forward Son Heung-min at halftime, he had limited impact, with only one touch in South Africa’s penalty area.

South Korea, who only needed a point from the match to secure their position, finished third in Group A. Their progression to the last 32 now depends on results from other groups, hoping to qualify as one of the best third-placed sides.

Coach Broos’s Extended Tenure

The victory means that South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, will remain in the dugout for longer than he might have anticipated. Broos had announced his intention to retire at the end of the tournament, making this achievement particularly emotional for him. He expressed pride in his team’s performance, highlighting their tactical discipline and fighting spirit.

Broos, who took charge of the South African men’s national team in 2021, noted that many had doubted his squad before the tournament. He stated that the team’s belief in themselves was evident in their play. The coach emphasized that the team will continue to fight in their upcoming matches.

The South African government also extended its congratulations to the team, acknowledging their determination and discipline. The performance has been described as inspiring hope and excitement across the nation, showcasing the country’s football talent globally.

Looking Ahead to the Knockouts

South Africa’s journey in the World Cup will continue with a match against Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday. This upcoming fixture is scheduled for 20:00 BST. The team will aim to build on their historic group stage performance as they enter the knockout phase for the first time.

The team’s progression has been celebrated as a moment that surpasses the excitement of hosting the World Cup in 2010, where South Africa became the first host nation not to advance past the group stage. Fans and observers alike have noted the profound national pride generated by this achievement.

The match statistics showed South Africa with 13 shots compared to South Korea’s 8, and 4 shots on target versus South Korea’s 3. South Africa also had an xG (expected goals) of 1.1022, slightly higher than South Korea’s 0.9972. The team’s next challenge is against Canada.
