Uruguay has exited the World Cup group stage amidst controversy and what has been described as “disgrace.” Coach Marcelo Bielsa has taken full responsibility for the team’s early departure following a 1-0 defeat to Spain, a result that highlighted their struggles throughout the tournament. Bielsa reflected on his tenure, stating that any contributions a coach makes are not truly established without achieving results, acknowledging that his time left “nothing behind.”

The team’s performance against Spain was particularly fraught. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was substituted at half-time after an error led to Alex Baena’s goal. Captain Fede Valverde was also removed during the second half and reportedly ignored Bielsa as he returned to the bench. The match concluded with a red card for Agustin Canobbio in stoppage time, who was dismissed for a lunge on Pau Cubarsi. Canobbio’s reaction to the red card, which included remonstrating with officials and raising his hand to referee Ismail Elfath’s chest, drew further criticism, with one commentator describing the exit as “disgraceful.”

Their campaign included draws against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Bielsa expressed his belief that the team deserved to secure seven points from their three matches but ultimately finished with only two. His contract is set to conclude after this World Cup.

Team dynamics and individual errors

This marks the second consecutive World Cup where Uruguay has failed to advance past the group stage. While their previous exit was attributed to goal difference, this campaign has been characterised by internal discord between the coach and players, alongside individual mistakes. The second-half performance against Saudi Arabia offered a glimpse of their potential, but the tournament was ultimately undermined by errors.

Muslera’s mistake against Spain was a significant moment, though his despairing glance after the ball entered the net was not the sole image of Uruguay’s World Cup. The team conceded four goals during the tournament, all stemming from basic errors. These included Muslera spilling a header against Saudi Arabia, a defensive wall parting for a Cape Verde free-kick, and a misplaced pass that led to an equaliser when Muslera was positioned outside his box. Muslera was replaced by Sergio Rochet at half-time against Spain.

Bielsa’s decision to bring Muslera back into the squad, despite Rochet having kept clean sheets in his three previous games before being dropped, has been noted. Rochet had previously replaced Muslera before the 2022 World Cup. The current squad is also seen as not matching the standards of previous generations, lacking players like Luis Suárez, Diego Forlán, or Edinson Cavani. This perceived decline makes it challenging for the team to accept their performance, often leading to scrutiny of the manager.

Bielsa’s approach and player discontent

Bielsa’s record at World Cups has been challenging. His Argentina team exited in the group stage of the 2002 World Cup, and his Chile side reached the last 16 in 2010. This latest campaign with Uruguay saw them unable to secure victories against Saudi Arabia or Cape Verde, concluding in what has been described as a “storm of spite and ill-discipline.”

Reports indicate that four senior Uruguay players—Rochet, Manuel Ugarte, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Federico Valverde—requested a meeting with Bielsa before the match against Spain. They reportedly raised concerns about the intensity of training, which they claimed led to injuries. They also suggested a change in strategy for the Spain game, proposing a low block and counter-attacking approach. Bielsa, known for his distinct tactical philosophy, reportedly declined their request. Instead, he called a team meeting where he addressed the players for 48 minutes, explaining his intention to mirror Spain’s playing style and justifying his decision to include injured but loyal players in the World Cup squad.

Bielsa is also reported to have accused the squad of attempting to remove him at various points, including following Suárez’s departure and criticism almost two years prior. He also reportedly faced dissent when he omitted Nahitan Nández, a versatile and experienced player from Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League, from the World Cup squad. Suárez’s departure occurred after the Copa América. The intense and idiosyncratic nature of Bielsa’s management style, particularly within the confines of a tournament camp, is suggested to have strained relationships within the team. Following a lengthy address from Bielsa, several players reportedly left the meeting despite attempts by defender José María Giménez to persuade them to stay. Ronald Araújo, a Barcelona defender who did not play in the first two games, reportedly summarised the mood by stating, “God willing we advance from the group, but this can’t be endured any longer.”

Bielsa’s legacy in tactical history is significant, but for both him and Uruguay, this tournament has been described as dreadful.

The coach’s contract expires after this World Cup.
