Crucial Group D Encounter

Australia and Paraguay are facing each other in their final World Cup 2026 group stage match, with a spot in the knockout rounds on the line. The game is being played in Santa Clara.

The winner of this fixture will secure automatic qualification for the knockout stage, reaching six points in Group D. The team that loses, ending with three points, would then need to await other results to see if they qualify as one of the best eight third-placed nations.

Should the match end in a draw, both teams would finish with four points. In this scenario, goal difference would become the deciding factor. Australia currently has a goal difference of zero, while Paraguay’s is minus two. With these figures remaining the same in a draw, Australia would advance in second place, leaving Paraguay to hope for a spot among the best third-placed teams.

Group Stage Standings and Tie-Breakers

USA has already secured the top spot in Group D and qualified for the knockout stage. Turkey, on the other hand, has been eliminated from the competition ahead of their match against USA.

The rules for this World Cup prioritise head-to-head records over goal difference as the second deciding factor in group standings, after points. If teams are level on points, the head-to-head result between them determines who ranks higher.

In cases where multiple teams are tied on points, a mini-league is formed using only the results from matches involving those teams. Ranking is then determined by points won in these head-to-head games, followed by goal difference, and then goals scored. If teams remain level, the overall group goal difference and goals scored are considered.

Further tie-breaking criteria include the Team Conduct Score (TCS), which is a fair play score based on the number of cards accumulated. Yellow cards incur a deduction of one point, a red card for two yellows results in a three-point deduction, a straight red card means a four-point deduction, and a yellow followed by a straight red leads to a five-point deduction. The team closer to zero has a better score. If teams are still level, their FIFA ranking from June’s update would be used.

The top eight third-placed teams are determined by points accumulated. If multiple nations finish third with the same number of points, goal difference becomes the decider. Teams with four points or more are likely to progress, while those with three points would require a favourable goal difference.

Match Action

Early in the second half, Paraguay made a substitution, with Mauricio replacing Alexandro Maidana. Shortly after, Mauricio registered Paraguay’s first shot on target of the match.

Jackson Irvine of Australia delivered a low cross from the right side, but no Australian player was in position to capitalise. Irvine later received a yellow card for a foul.

Nestory Irankunda drove into the box from the right for Australia, but his cross went out of play. Similarly, Julio Enciso of Paraguay advanced before setting up Caceres, whose cross also went out of play.

The match resumed in Santa Clara after the half-time interval.

Scotland’s chances of reaching the knockout stage for the first time are uncertain, with their fate now dependent on the results of other third-placed teams.

The game is currently in progress, with neither side having made a breakthrough.
