Boston: Bellingham in heated exchange with Ghana coach Queiroz during goalless draw

Half-time confrontation
England midfielder Jude Bellingham was involved in a heated exchange with Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz and his staff during half-time of Tuesday’s goalless draw at Boston Stadium. The incident occurred shortly after Bellingham committed a foul, shoving Jerome Opoku, which led to tensions spilling over as the referee blew for half-time. Bellingham had to be separated from the Ghana coach by teammate Morgan Rogers as players and coaches made their way to the tunnel.
England manager Thomas Tuchel defended Bellingham, stating, “It was an exchange of emotions, and Jude stood up for himself and his team.” Tuchel acknowledged that emotions are part of the game but stressed the importance of avoiding distractions. Queiroz commented on the situation, saying, “He had a bad reaction with some bad names and that’s why the story started.” No cards were issued during the incident, and tensions appeared to subside by the start of the second half.
Bellingham later downplayed the confrontation, describing his initial tackle as “silly.” He explained that he was trying to win the ball and followed through, catching the opponent. He spoke with the player afterwards, but Ghana’s bench reacted strongly, attempting to get him a yellow card. Bellingham recognised Queiroz, noting his past association with Manchester United, and described the interaction as purely a “competitive edge” between them.
England’s struggle to break down Ghana
The goalless draw left England frustrated, marking their second consecutive draw in a major tournament and prolonging their wait to advance to the World Cup knockout rounds. Despite dominating statistically with 18 shots to Ghana’s two and maintaining 59% possession, England failed to score against a resilient Ghanaian defence. Bellingham described the outcome as “very frustrating,” acknowledging Ghana’s effective strategy.
Ghana’s manager, Carlos Queiroz, had instructed his team to play “compact,” a strategy that midfielder Kwasi Sibo confirmed the squad followed. Defender Gideon Mensah expressed satisfaction with their combination of tight defending and swift counter-attacks. Bellingham credited Ghana for maintaining their defensive shape and funnelling English attackers wide, making it difficult to penetrate their defence. He noted that the middle of the pitch felt “clogged.”
Pundit Micah Richards observed that England lacked bravery in their play compared to their previous match against Croatia. He suggested that against a team employing a low block, England needed players like Phil Foden or Cole Palmer to unlock tight areas. Tuchel, however, stated he was not frustrated, having anticipated a difficult match against a physical and committed Ghana side. He praised Ghana’s defensive effort and noted that England had enough shots and crosses, including a significant chance for Harry Kane.

Pre-match incident and player performance
Prior to the match, an incident occurred during the pre-match handshakes where England defender Djed Spence reportedly did not shake hands with Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey. Partey, who is facing charges, had been booed by England fans in the first half. The Football Association had previously stated it would not issue guidance to the England squad regarding handshakes with Partey. Other England players either shook hands or fist-bumped Partey.
Bellingham, who became the youngest England player to reach 50 caps, was named player of the match despite his own assessment that he did not deserve the award. He felt it should have gone to a Ghanaian player due to their strong defensive performance. Bellingham had started and scored against Croatia, but his place in England’s starting XI was uncertain before the tournament, with Tuchel stating he had to fight for his position.
This draw keeps England at the top of Group L. They are guaranteed to qualify for the last 32 if they avoid defeat against Panama in New York on Saturday.
