Serena Williams’ Singles Return and Injury
Serena Williams‘ return to Wimbledon singles play concluded with a first-round defeat, and her participation in the doubles alongside sister Venus Williams is now uncertain due to a knee injury. The 44-year-old sustained the injury during her singles match against Maya Joint on Tuesday.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, made her comeback to Centre Court after 1,462 days away from Wimbledon. Despite her efforts, she ultimately lost to the 20-year-old Joint in three sets: 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3. This match marked her first singles appearance as a professional tennis player in four years.
During the match, Williams reportedly tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set. Sources indicated that despite advice not to continue, she played through the injury, pushing Joint throughout the contest. Following the match, her knee was swollen, and she was offered crutches, which she declined.

Williams did not attend her mandatory post-match press conference, with Wimbledon organisers stating she was “not able to undertake” her duties. Her agent, Jill Smoller, confirmed that Williams was excused from media obligations by the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams due to the knee injury. Smoller added that Williams left the site unaided and is doing everything possible to be ready for her doubles match later in the week.
Doubles Hopes in Jeopardy
The prospect of Serena Williams reuniting with her older sister Venus Williams on a Grand Slam court for the first time since 2022 is now in serious peril. The sisters are six-time doubles champions at the All England Club, and their potential reunion has generated significant anticipation.
Missing the doubles competition would be a disappointing end to Williams’ much-anticipated return to Wimbledon. Her comeback has been a focal point of attention in SW19, with considerable interest surrounding her decision to return and her performance on court.
Williams had previously played what she believed would be her final match at the 2022 US Open, though she avoided using the term ‘retirement,’ instead stating she was “evolving away” from tennis. Her determination in the singles match against Joint, despite the injury, highlights her competitive spirit.

While Williams has not officially ruled out her participation in the doubles, the indications suggest that another emotional appearance on Centre Court with Venus Williams is highly uncertain. The decision on her fitness for the doubles match is pending.
Maya Joint’s Victory
Maya Joint’s victory over Serena Williams was a significant moment in her young career. Joint, the world No. 87, described her win as the realisation of a dream. She acknowledged Williams’ legendary status and aura on court.
Joint demonstrated resilience in the match, particularly after Williams fought back to force a third set. Williams’ serve remained strong, and she showed glimpses of her ball-striking ability, but her movement was noted as a liability, and she appeared to fade physically in the final set. Joint ultimately recovered to close out the match.

The crowd at Centre Court offered strong support for Williams, standing in unison as she reappeared and urging her on throughout the match. Despite the defeat, Williams’ return showcased her enduring fighting spirit.
